EDUCATION
Representative Dan Sullivan is a champion for education. As a member of the House Education Committee, he voted to increase teacher pay and increased standards for student achievement. He wants to ensure that every child is equipped with the tools needed to support themselves and lead productive, independent lives. Dan was the House author of a bill that would help protect teachers from frivolous lawsuits and that bill was vetoed by the Governor.
Representative Sullivan believes in and has voted for:
- Increased standards for a strong curriculum based on the core subjects of math, science, English, and social studies.
- Targeting a greater percentage of existing school funding directly to classrooms, rather than pay for layers of administration, where it is needed most.
- More funds to ease the burden of unfunded state mandates on schools.
- Making schools accountable to the parents and students they serve.
- Funding support for the Endowed Chairs program at our state’s colleges and universities.
ECONOMIC GROWTH
Representative Dan Sullivan believes Oklahoma must continue to improve our business environment. We must make Oklahoma more attractive to the existing business community and new businesses to protect current jobs, ensure future job growth and provide for a better quality of life for our citizens.
Representative Sullivan accomplishments include:
- Lead the successful passage of a historic bond package this past session bringing $25 million in funds to build three low-water dams on the Arkansas River to enhance our greatest natural resource.
- Author of lawsuit reform bills each of the four years he has served in the legislature
- Reducing barriers to business expansion and encouraging job creation
PUBLIC SAFETY
Representative Sullivan is a proven advocate for safety. His dedication to justice, security, and the well-being of the public is clear. Representative Sullivan has a long and passionate commitment to public safety. He understands the hard reality of crime, and the impact it has on our community. Dan has served Tulsa County as a Reserve Deputy since 1999.
Representative Sullivan has lead many efforts to improve safety in Oklahoma:
- Working with law enforcement, he helped increase penalties for crimes against the elderly and incapacitated.
- He is working to expand the state’s DNA database so law enforcement can solve crimes more efficiently and improve conviction rates of criminals.
- He authored the law that relieves some of the financial burden borne by the Tulsa County Jail when facing rising medical costs for inmates.
Representative Sullivan believes in:
- Quick and efficient exercise of justice in our legal system.
- Capital punishment for convicted first-degree murderers, major drug traffickers, and killers of public safety personnel including police officers, firefighters, corrections officers, and emergency medical responders.
- Strongly supporting efforts to combat domestic violence and child abuse.
- Putting the right people behind bars. Those that commit minor offenses can become professional criminals when sent to prison. We should prioritize those crimes that require prison time.
- Making people that commit crimes be responsible to pay restitution to their victims.
TAXES & REGULATIONS
Representative Sullivan firmly believes that the revenues of government should not exceed the cost of government.
Furthermore, spending should only grow at a rate required to fund a small, efficient and effective government. Our state government is the largest employer in Oklahoma. Representative Sullivan believes it’s clear that our state government is too large and costly. We must prioritize spending so that our tax dollars go to programs that work rather than being wasted on bureaucracy and programs that don’t help people.
Representative Sullivan is a leader who invests in people:
- He helped lower income tax rates for hard working Oklahomans.
- He helped pass legislation that raises the standard deduction and eliminate estate taxes.
- He worked to invest $2.3 billion in our state and county roads over the next eight years, without raising taxes!
Representative Sullivan believes in:
- Supporting efforts to stimulate economic growth by cutting fees and taxes for all individuals and businesses.
- Reducing the tax burden on working families by cutting or eliminating income taxes.
- Ending the death tax. It is unfair and requires families pay taxes on the assets of a loved one when that person dies.
- Lowering taxes over continued expansion of state bureaucracy. Revenue in excess of government expenditures should be returned to taxpayers.
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
Representative Sullivan co-authored legislation HB 1804
Every day, thousands of people risk everything to cross our borders illegally. Most of these people are not bad people; they are simply in search of a better life. However, if they are coming to the U.S and land in Oklahoma illegally, they are hurting hard working Oklahomans.
Unfortunately, our current system rewards their illegal actions by providing services, which are subsidized by Oklahoma taxpayers. Representative Sullivan favors comprehensive immigration reform and encourages immigrants to follow proper legal channels to gain citizenship.
Representative Sullivan believes:
- The first and best step to curbing illegal immigration is to secure our American borders. Representative Sullivan believes as long as both of our borders remain unsecured, our country is vulnerable to terrorists, drug traffickers and other criminals who intend to harm our people and our way of life.
- Dan believes that we need to instill a better respect for the law in the next generation of Oklahomans and Americans.
- Dan believes that by taking action on the part of the State of Oklahoma and other states that the federal government will be forced to create a guest worker program that will allow people to legally cross our borders to pursue employment.
Even when doing so would be difficult, time-consuming or inconvenient, Dan believes that those living in America must abide by our laws and be here legally
Representative Sullivan, will always approach the issue of immigration with common sense and respect. However, he firmly believes we must secure our borders, enforce our immigration laws.
